Midnight Moon

My shadow shows crisp on the ground behind me, splayed upward from my seat at the broad inlet's edge. A ghost forest of twisting black skeletons rises against the full moon. Mist glows atop the water in creeping silver tendrils. A meteor blazes half way across the sky, arcing below the moon and half way through Scorpio before the night claims its fire. A quick swish of wings with a raven's mournful croak cut the silence.

My kids, and my teacher, are finally asleep. It's just me out here, wrapped in my favorite patched winter puffy against winter's crisp chill. An hour slips past as I gaze across the lake and my thoughts wander.

Eventually I say good night. As I turn in, fog rises to wrap me in sleep.
